Finding Meaning in Paper

The blank piece of paper, how much meaning does it really have? Paper is something that has been around for 3,000 years and is a symbol of all that is to be written and reflects everything that can be in the hopes of something. This is where I want to bring in the meaning of paper and the meaning people have behind clothing. The end result in beating the clothing and turning it into paper. Some parts may stand out more than others and the details of it close up are interesting to look at. I didn't realize how beautiful and powerful one piece of paper can mean until I started making it. The process and the outcome are so satisfying.

I want the viewer to be interested in the details that come out in the clothing and think about the story that may be behind it. I want to scan in the paper I make and blow it up poster size so that the details are shown more and bring out the little details that might have been lost in the beginning. The touch and feeling of the paper will be different because some clothing will be made out of different material. Every single piece will have its own meaning and they will all look different even if it is from the same material.

This semester I will be spending 99% of my time making the paper because it takes about 3 hours to cut the clothing, 3-3.5 hours on the paper beater, and another 3 to make about 60 sheets of paper. The paper needs to dry overnight and then it is done that is when I will pick out at least 5 sheets and scan them in to see the details close up. I am thinking of the “theme” of the paper to make sure that every piece I make goes together and it isn't just random ideas. I did want to do a lot of testing because I was scared to mess up someones clothing but then I got some reassurance and realized that every item will be a test because I don't know what the outcome will look like I don't know what parts will stand out more than others until I pull it and let it dry. If it doesn't look as good as I thought it would I can always throw it back into the beater and start again.
