Fibers of Memory

I am so amazed with how fast our show happened all the hard work everyone put into it. I am happy with how my work turned out and got great feedback from people on it. the photos to the right and the jars of fabric/paper pulp were last minute ideas and I am so happy that I decided to do it because I really think it helps show the before and after of making the fabric into paper.

I felt close with my grammies again when making the paper of her clothing and unexceptionally my grampa passed away last week so before this year ends and to add on to my seminar work I want to take his clothing and make paper from it to give to my family because they all already wanted the paper from my grammie. I am thinking of start a small business from this because I think that this is a great way to display a loved ones item.

The show came down in a blink of an eye and I cant believe I will be graduating in less than a mouth. This is something that I would love to continue to do because the meaning behind it is so powerful.

Fiber of Memory

I have been thinking a lot and have changed thoughts for my show so many times. I went from just making paper from clothing of people that had stories behind it to just clothing from my grammie to now making the paper from clothing from my grammie, my mom, and myself. Making this piece almost like generations with the different paper. Having a loved one pass you keep things from them to remember them, for example clothing. I had clothing from my grammie who passed away that would just lay around but couldn't get rid of them because they were a part of her. That is when the paper making thought came into mind, having the paper from her clothing but I can make things from it or simply have a framed piece of it hanging in my house. I am now working on making a booklet of the paper and making squares of the clothing I made the paper with.

Worn Memories

I am going through the process now of making the paper form my grammies clothing. At first I didn't think it was going to be too hard because I have made paper before from clothing but this clothing was different, this clothing had my grammie in it. Through cutting and making the paper it brought back great times that I had with her and made me feel connected with her again. It wasn't just another sheet of paper I'm making it had meaning behind it and really touched my heart making it. I feel as though this could be something for others to do if they had a loved one pass and didn't know what to do with their clothing because it makes you feel close with that person again and help you through the process of grieving.

I am thinking of possibly making a quilt as well because my grammie used to make tee shirt quilts for all of her granddaughters for their graduation day. I kept pieces of the original clothing so that I can sew the paper with the clothing as a pattern. I am also thinking of titles but nothing has really stuck yet.

Memories_KG

I was stuck for awhile making sure that what I am doing is what I want to do for the show. I have found pictures and am in the process of getting clothing. I have enough clothing to get some paper out of but my goal is to get at least 5-10 different sheets of paper.

I am going to get stories of memories that my family has had with my grammie and incorporate those into my piece. Being part of a big family helps in this case my grammie was the oldest of 13 kids and all of them had roughly 5 kids. With counting all of my cousins and second cousins my niece is number 105 on my moms side of the family. I really enjoy looking at the old photos of my grammie when she was a child so I do want to get a lot of those to show.

For my first sheet of paper I will be making the paper out of her red sox shirts. Every year my grammie and grampa would go down to Florida from November to April and they would go watch the red sox's spring training and almost everyone that would visit them went to watch as well.

Kara Guttadauro

As this semester begins I've been thinking a lot about how all my pieces will tie in together and also thinking about how can I sell this if it was a real business. After talking and thinking of different ways to show my work I am going forward with finding old pictures of my grammie and getting some of her clothing. I still will be getting stories but this time it will be of the same person but from friends and family.

I had scanned in 5 out of 60 of the paper that I made last semester pulling ones that had different details in them and made some edits to sharpen the details some more. Each piece of paper is different and has its own look so picking was hard. I really enjoyed the end result of this paper and I want to print it large so that the viewer can see the details in the small paper. I really wanted the story with the paper but I realized that just the paper alone is powerful and interesting to look at. I still want the story so I am thinking of different ways to show it without just placing it next to the paper.
